Australian law recognises that Family Violence is more than physical injury. It includes control, manipulation and harm caused in different ways. It can be:

– assault

– sexual assault

– stalking

– threats

– threats to disclose a person’s sexual orientation against their wishes

– repeated derogatory taunts

– intentionally injuring a pet

– intentionally damaging property

– withholding financial support

– depriving someone of time with their friends and family

– coersive control

– serious neglect of a child

– withholding medication

– threatening suicide or self-harm with the intention or tormenting the family member

It includes exposing a child to family violence directed at another family member. For example, if a child:

– overhearing threats

– sees or hears an assault

– comforts or provides assistance to someone who was assaulted

– cleans up after property is damaged

– sees Police or an ambulance attend after an incident
