Am I a “victim”?
There a three categories of eligible victims:
- ‘Primary Victim’ – the offence happened directly to them or their tried to prevent a crime occurring.
- ‘Secondary Victim’ – present at the scene of a violent crime, injured as a direct result of witnessing a crime or are a the parent of a child victim who was under 18 years old when the crime occurred.
- ‘Related Victim’ – a close family member, dependent or intimate partner of a deceased victim.
What types of crimes?
If you are the victim or survivor of an ‘act of violence’ and have suffered an injury (physical or psychological), you might be eligible for Government funding to pay for costs you now face as a result of the crime. An ‘act of violence’ can be :
- assault
- sexual assault
- childhood sexual abuse
- attempted murder
- robbery
- aggravated burglary
- conduct endangering life
- threat of death or injury
- depriving a person of liberty
Funding available
Funding can help pay for counselling, security measures, medical costs, mental/physical health programs and loss of income and others. We give you advice about what financial assistance you might be eligible for, help you gather paperwork and submit the application. Most applications are processed without needing to go to Court but if there is a Court hearing, we speak on your behalf at the hearing.
