This list does not cover everything but hopefully gives you a start on things to do when you separate:
– if there are safety risks, contact a family violence support service – such as Safe Steps, Orange Door, the Magistrates Court or the Police.
– if safe, create a parenting schedule.
– tell your friends and family.
– get legal advice about your property and parenting options. Even a once-off meeting can clarify so many questions and save you from making wrong or delayed decisions.
– consider moving out.
– find your important documents (like identification, credit cards, Marriage Certificate).
– change your online account passwords.
– change your computer and phone passwords.
– consider adjusting social media accounts or blocking your ex, if needed.
– update the beneficiary on your superannuation fund and life insurances.
– update your Will and Power of Attorney.
– if you have children, do a free, fast, online estimate of how much child support might be paid – https://processing.csa.gov.au/estimator/About.aspx
– tell Centrelink (tip: if you have young kids, you might be eligible for single parent payments even if you are still living in the same house)
– tell the ATO on your next tax return
– if you need it, find professional supports, such as a Counsellor, peer support group or Divorce coach.
